Ebook About Respected by his baseball peers, beloved by Chicago fans and teammates, Ernie Banks did everything there was to do in the game he loved. Everything, that is, except play in a World Series. How and why that experience eluded him during one season of particular promise—1969—is a key storyline of this fresh look at one of baseball's legendary players. Banks, who had picked cotton outside Dallas as a youth, ascended from a barnstorming semipro team to the major leagues after Kansas City Monarchs manager Buck O'Neil placed him with the Cubs. During his time in Chicago, Banks won two MVPs and received an education far better than the one he received in the segregated schools he'd attended, gaining important life skills while playing the game he was born to play.Book Ernie Banks: Mr. Cub and the Summer of '69 Review :
To me, this book was a pleasant surprise, having read some of the reviews and not expecting a very good book. But, this book was good for me, probably because I didn't know a lot about Ernie Banks. It tells the story of the life and baseball career of Ernie Banks intertwined with the events of the 1969 season. Now, I agree that there are better books on the 1969 season, but this one tells it from Ernie's perspective.Ernie was always very positive about baseball and life in general, and this comes through in the book. And, some of the events of his career are also highlighted including winning the MVP for two years straight, very rare and the events of his career in 1969 are also highlighted, including his timely hits and homeruns. It is only sad that the 1969 season ended the way that it did for the Cubs. But, Ernie took it in stride. What a great baseball player and a great human being. And, this book does a great job of writing about him. Great read with revealing insight from on and off the field in Ernie's life. If your a Cubs fan you'll love this book. Makes me want to learn about the season that followed in 1970. Cubs were in it until the end. Wonder if the same clubhouse dynamics held true that year too...
